Gastric Balloon
Gastric Balloon (also known as Intragastric Balloon) is a non-surgical treatment for weight loss. It is commonly used for morbidly obese individuals to reduce the risks associated with surgical interventions. The procedure involves filling part of the stomach with a balloon to suppress appetite. It is generally recommended for patients with a BMI between 27–35 kg/m² who do not have conditions like diabetes.

Types of Gastric Balloons
There are three types of gastric balloons based on how long they stay in the stomach:

  • 4 months (Elipse™ Gastric Balloon)

  • 6 months

  • 12 months

Elipse™ Gastric Balloon
This is the latest and most modern version. The Elipse balloon stays in the stomach for 4 months and is swallowed in pill form, eliminating the need for anesthesia or endoscopy. Like other balloons, it helps you feel full with less food and delays hunger by slowing digestion.

How Is the Elipse™ Procedure Performed?
The balloon is inside a small capsule that is swallowed with water. An abdominal X-ray is used to confirm its position in the stomach. Then it is filled with about 550 ml of liquid through a thin tube, which is then removed. The procedure takes about 20 minutes and requires no anesthesia or surgery. After 16 weeks, the balloon naturally deflates and is excreted from the body without any intervention.

Advantages of Elipse™ Gastric Balloon

  • No surgery or anesthesia required

  • No endoscopy

  • Naturally dissolves and is excreted after 4 months

  • Lower complication rate compared to other balloon types (only 1.49%)

  • Ideal for patients who cannot or do not want to undergo anesthesia

Who Is Suitable for Elipse™?
It is suitable for the same group as other balloon methods. However, it is especially preferred by those who are afraid of anesthesia or who are medically unable to receive anesthesia. Since it doesn’t require removal through endoscopy, the patient avoids anesthesia twice.

How Much Weight Can Be Lost?
On average, patients lose around 13–15 kg in 4 months. With additional support from a dietitian and proper nutrition, it is possible to lose up to 25–30 kg.
