What is a Bichectomy?
A Bichectomy is a cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess fat tissue from the buccal fat pad (the fat located between the cheekbones and jawbone). The procedure aims to enhance the definition of the face, resulting in a more sculpted, contoured appearance with prominent cheekbones. This fat pad plays a significant role in the overall shape of the face. When enlarged, it can cause the cheeks to appear fuller and the face to look rounder, which may lead to a less defined, broader face over time.
Some individuals naturally have more pronounced buccal fat, regardless of their body weight, causing the face to appear rounder even in those with a slim physique. Bichectomy helps to slim down the face by removing excess fat and contouring the cheeks, resulting in a more angular, triangular shape and more defined facial features. Additionally, the procedure has the effect of highlighting the cheekbones and offering a more youthful, chiseled look.
How is a Bichectomy Performed?
Bichectomy is a minimally invasive procedure typically conducted under local anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort for the patient. If combined with other aesthetic procedures, general anesthesia may be recommended.
The procedure begins with small incisions made inside the mouth, on each side of the cheeks. Through these incisions, the surgeon gently accesses and removes the excess fat tissue. The incisions are then closed using self-dissolving sutures, so there is no need for stitch removal. The entire process typically lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.
Who is a Suitable Candidate for Bichectomy?
As Bichectomy is a purely aesthetic procedure with no medical necessity, it is most suitable for individuals who wish to enhance the definition of their facial features. It is particularly effective for those with round or oval-shaped faces who seek a more contoured and sculpted appearance.
However, not everyone is an ideal candidate for this procedure. Those with already narrow or sunken faces may find that Bichectomy could exacerbate these features, potentially giving the face a more hollow or aged appearance. For such individuals, this procedure is generally not recommended.
An experienced plastic surgeon will assess your facial structure and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for Bichectomy during your consultation.
What to Expect After a Bichectomy?
Since Bichectomy is performed inside the mouth, maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial to prevent infections. Your surgeon may recommend special mouthwashes or antiseptic solutions to support the healing process and minimize the risk of complications.
In the first few days following the surgery, you should follow a soft-food diet and drink liquids only. This helps avoid any irritation or pressure in the mouth area while the incisions heal. Adherence to the prescribed medication is essential for a smooth recovery. Additionally, it is advised to avoid smoking and alcohol, as they can impede the healing process.
To reduce swelling and bruising, applying cold compresses to the treated areas for 15 minutes every 4–5 hours during the first 3 days will be beneficial. You should also avoid strenuous physical activity such as heavy lifting, running, or intense exercise for the first 5-7 days post-surgery. After approximately 3 weeks, you can resume your normal daily activities, while the final contour of your face will fully settle over the next several months.
